BALLFEST 2010

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Thanks to all the teams that have already indicated their interest in BALLFEST this summer!! I have been juggling with the idea of doing the tournament this year and how it may need to be structured in order to work best. The input received has helped the decision to go ahead with the tourney this year and the last matter of details is solidifying the date. Our first league meeting will be on March 31 after which I hope to finalize the date of the tournament. STAY TUNED!! Information and registration forms will be available online shortly….

OLYMPIC PICS- DAY 1

Friday, March 5th, 2010

My first day in Vancouver proved to be a great set up for the week. Starting with the early morning flight and boarding behind the Russian Mogul team, had me raring to go. A quick stop at the grocery store to make sure we were well nourished for the week and then it was downtown by noon for the party. Watching the Canadian Women skate, shoot and score their way to a 18-0 victory over Slovakia in my first live Olympic hockey game set of a good pace for the first evening of victory celebrating!!

OLYMPIC PICS - DAY 2

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Day 2 - Being a little more rushed for the bus than anticipated set the day off to a quick pace. This pace was slowed right down to a standstill as we waited in line for almost 2 hours for food & drink at Cypress. Luckily the Mens Mogul Competition was nothing short of remarkable and got our adrenaline pumping again as we routed on our Canadian guys. Alexandre Bilodeau had a 23 second run of a lifetime and earned the FIRST CANADIAN GOLD MEDAL ON HOME SOIL…AMAZING!!!

OLYMPIC PICS - DAY 3

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Day 3 was also full of excitement and medal winning, this time with some old friends from Calgary in the mix too! Having learnt a few lessons about the bus system to Cypress on Day 2, we were a little more casual in getting to our 6:45am bus by 7:45am. The General Admission standing tickets to the Mens Snowboard Cross had been cancelled the night before and the line ups for food, drink and washrooms were much more acceptable. Sitting behind the moms and dads of Canadian Snowboard Cross team members Drew Neilson and Mike Robertson brought the heart right in to our viewing experience. Mike Robertson took the SILVER MEDAL and so the reign of Olympic Winning spectating stands true!! ps…this was the day of my WORLD WIDE TELEVISION DEBUT!!!

OLYMPIC PICS - DAY 4

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Just when you think that my Olympic experience couldn’t get any more awesome…it does!! Day 4 was filled with friends, celebrations and CANADIAN MENS HOCKEY!!! We headed downtown early to take in a bit of the action around Robson and ended up at the Media House. It wasn’t long before we were part of a live radio broadcast and recording that was to be played in the following days. CA-NA-DA, CA-NA-DA, CA-NA-DA!! We made sure we headed towards Canada Hockey Place in good time to wait in the excessively long line up to watch, with a packed house none the less, the Canadians warm-up. It may have only been Norway, but everyone seemed to be on the edge of their seats for the duration of the game. What a buzz, and now a bit of a blur, as we skated our way to an 8-0 victory!!! It was over to Yaletown after the game to celebrate the victory and Emily’s birthday with a proper meal before hitting Granville street for a very late night party crawl!!

OLYMPIC PICS - DAY 5 & 6

Friday, March 5th, 2010

On day 5 my jersey had to be left at home to soak in Oxy-Clean while we went down to Granville Island to check out a few of the pavilions and grab a bite to eat. As a result, so too did the camera get left behind. It was a beautifully sunny day and, although we were a little tired from the late night before, or spirits were high! Shannon had to leave but, Adam and I geared up for another exiting night of Olympic hockey and the match up between the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It was a great game and neat experience to watch these 2 countries (formerly 1) battle it out with a ton of crowd backing for both sides. The Czechs ended up beating the Slovakians 3-1, but no questions the Slovaks were ready to play the heartfelt tournament of their lives.

Day 6 came with much sadness, as I knew I was to be leaving that afternoon.  As we headed downtown to check out the Irish House and a few other attractions before I left, I realized how much I didn’t want to go home. Having not carefully planned my flight however, I was rather distraught over the fact that I would be in the air during the Canada-Swedan hockey game. Since that didn’t really seem smart, I spent a couple hours on the phone with Air Canada trying to figure out I could delay flying home. Not having any of my flight information in front of me made this rather challenging and I opted to give up on it and just enjoy my last couple hours in Vancouver amongst the party. I was definitely pouting for the rest of the day, but made it home safely and very happy to have had the Olympic experience I did!!
